100 yrds of ruffle!

This is Andy's costume for Hello Dolly before the final tweaks, like fitting the waist and cinching the top, but you get the general idea of just how much gathered orchid polyester I have created in the last week. The skirt must weigh 10lbs. I hope she can still dance in it. After this experience I have great respect for the artists who make the headgear for the gals in Vegas. They must have the best hot glue guns in the world.

We were lucky enough to come across the perfect prom dress alleviating the need for me to make one.
I am so grateful! She looks like a movie star and I can move on to another project.

illuminated alliteration

My friend Terry and I are doing a group challenge for our quilt guild. The parameters are that 2 folks work on it and that it be bi colored. we have chosen to do illuminated initials in red and gold. Each of us will do the others first initial and our own last initial. We will then put our own together with a self portrait to balance the piece into a square.

I have of course chosen to put turtles on Terry's (not just because I am a fan of alliteration) because the turtle is a recurrent theme in her amazing work.
I have not totally decided what I will do for the self portrait but I'm sure it will come.

why sew when you can blog?

must find time to sew.........

sew much sewing just because

my sewing is always eclectic and varied ( a great thing for my very short attentions span). the last few days have allowed me to produce
a custom photo lovey for my nephew William ,

a set of burp rags for my 15 yr old cousin's new baby Eliza Janell,

and Andy's costume for her school play. I have no photo of A's costume but I did the math as I was hemming (and hemming and hemming) today and I made almost 100 yards of ruffle for her costume. Dang, that is one heavy skirt.

All this and I haven't sewn a single thing that pays.
Always a nice way to roll.

birthday treasure

Ah quilt day.

I must start this blog with a slight explanation. I have never been much of a joiner. As Randal would say "I hate people but I love gatherings". I don't actually hate people I just don't really get them and organized groups have the tendency to cause folks to revert to playground mentalities.
No thanks!
That being said I was encouraged to join my local quilt guild by several different people in my life and so I did. This group of gals has turned out to be pretty fantastic, warm, welcoming, encouraging, open minded, the list goes on. I am aware that this is somewhat rare in the quilting world (and the regular world) but I am glad to have stumbled into the right place (it happens to me a lot).
I've been introduced to many things thanks to my involvement with this group. One of the best being this magical place called the treasure table. It's a mini guild yard sale. They have them when ever they gather for any kind of show. As a lover of old things and fabric and low prices, this is heaven for me. The pic above is 5 yards of vintage cotton dress fabric that was still stiff with the original sizing, that I purchased as part of a $5 grab bag. I'm sure it's going to be my new favorite dress. There were several other fabrics in my grab bag in interesting patterns and sizable quantities. I'm not sure as of yet what their fates will be. My goal for now is to find the perfect dress pattern for my prefect fabric.

birthday suit

My friend Terry gave me this amazing fabric for my birthday and so I made this amazing jacket from it. I realized that I had some antique velvet that was an exact color match but not in good enough shape to be a functional part of the garment.
The answer .... covered buttons . They are perfect. This is an unlined McCall's pattern (M5276).

It has a nice A line and a sweet pleat in the back
that I toped with one of those perfect
I plan to accent the hem with more aqua possibly beads or couched cord, only time will tell

Today I am off to quilt day and I will be sporting this little honey, while I take lots of pix for tomorrows B-day blog.
